Planning permission 'still required' for conservatory

By LIAM THOMPSON
COUNCIL planners are reminding homeowners in Northumberland that planning permission is still required for conservatories.
Articles and advertisements in local media claiming that conservatories no longer need planning approval have been branded "completely misleading" by Northumberland County Council's planning department.

In an article in a Tweed dale Press supplement Homes and Gardens, accompanying the Berwick Advertiser on April 2, it was incorrectly stated that conservatories no longer needed to be approved by the council.

Paul Gee, director of development and regulatory services at the county council said the Town and Planning Act contained "some of the most complex pieces of legislation."

"This article does not take into account listed building, conservation areas, building regulations or the different planning regulations between England and Scotland," Mr Gee said.

"If anyone is thinking of doing any works to their dwellings, whether it is a conservatory, extension, or even an alteration, we recommend that they contact their local planning department for professional advice."
